The controversial title of his paper is "Why Most Published Research Findings are False." It's published in journal meant more for a medical audience, but I think statistically speaking, the findings apply to all sorts of research.

The argument sort of rests on the Bayesian interpretation of what probability is. I don't want to get into the gory mathematical details because that would be uninteresting but let the following stylized example illustrate:

Suppose you have a medical test that is 99% accurate. That is, if a person has a certain ailment (call it grooteditis), the test will come back positive 99% of the time. If the person on the other hand, does NOT have grooteditis, the test will show negative 99% of the time. So it is 99% correct. Now suppose you are a doctor and a person comes into your office and tests positive for grooteditis. Can you say with 99% certainty that this person has grooteditis?

Well, not really. The certainty of whether or not this person has grooteditis depends on what the prevalence of grooteditis is in the population. For example, what if there are SO few people with the disease in the population, that even when the test shows positive, among those times, it is often wrong? So for example, if only 1% of the population had grooteditis in reality, there's a good chance it's a false positive.

If you do the calculation it turns out that you can only say with 50% certainty that this person has the disease.

So what I think Ionnadis is mostly saying is an extended, detailed and sophisticated version of the above. Statistics obviously don't lie. But even if the data looks great, most theories are reductionist by necessity. In fact, one might say that the probability that a theory is true is probably very low. So the implication of this would be that we're probably, on average, too trusting of research findings.

I think this is good reason to pause before being sold on a "statistically significant" study done by this or that scholar or interest group. The probability that their research findings are true is probably even lower, as they generally have a more worldly vested interest in their subject matter.

farming with my tax dollars

FARMING WITH MY TAX DOLLARS

Maybe I’m not that smart, or more likely I just have not had
the time to dedicate to really studying this topic, but I wish someone would
explain to me how the rhetoric of free trade can co-exist with the practice of
farm subsidies?

I mean if we are going to promote free markets, efficiency,
and survival of the fittest, how can we justify $164.7 billion in farm payments
between 1995 to 2005? My grad
school teachers proposed the argument of national security, which I get to an
extent. Yes, if the US for
whatever reason could not access global food markets due to things like war,
famine, or what have you, yes, we would need to be able to grow our own food. But to this level and in the manner in
which subsidies are doled out to huge farming conglomerates?

Check out the SF Chronicle Article here. It's a good read about the issue and has some interesting insights on the future of California farming. For you market proponents, it depicts the innovations made by Cali-farmers in the small, organic farming space (these guys get a pittance of subsidy that Texans and midwesterners get) versus how the large farming conglomerates operate since they have the government safety net.

Easy to read

Everyone knows that elections are all about political posturing, but this is one of the most blatant and un-nuanced forms of political posturing that I've seen in a while. Got it off The Politicker, link to the article: http://polhudson.lohudblogs.com/2007/09/21/giuliani-at-the-nra/

Giuliani at the NRA

Former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani told members of the National Rifle Association earlier today that the lawsuit he filed against gun manufacturers in 2000 “is not necessarily what is needed now.’’

The Republican presidential hopeful told NRA members to “not feel singled out.’’

“I was excessive in every way that I could think of in order to reduce crime,’’ Giuliani said. “I enforced the guns laws that existed strongly.”

Giuliani added, “That is not necessarily what is needed now. It certainly isn’t the interpretation that I think is the correct interpretation of the Second Amendment. So I would say that I didn’t anticipate the lawsuit would go in some of the directions it is going.’’

However, the general counsel for Beretta USA Corp., which is one of the defendants in the lawsuit, disagreed with the former mayor’s characterization of the lawsuit.

“In fact the lawsuit is exactly the same one he started at the beginning of his administration,’’ said Jeff Reh, Beretta’s general counsel. The case is scheduled to be argued today before the Second Circuit Court of Appeals, Reh said.

Compelling column by Starquest

Once we get past the ironic hilarity of the bathroom stall incident:

Former Parks Commissioner and former CM, Henry Stern, has what I think is a very well-reasoned stance on the Larry Craig incident. He has, from the start, supported letting the Idahoans decide... although, it's clear for most people why the quick and dirty political crucifixion is more appealing to his erstwhile bedfellows.

Here's an excerpt that I received in my inbox recently. You can probably find the whole thing at www.nycivic.org.

"We ask whether a Senator elected by the people of any state should be forced from office for tapping his foot and swiping his hand in a toilet stall? Is intent sufficient for a conviction for lewd behavior, resulting in the loss of a job one has held for 17 years? What if, when they met face to face, one man had found the other to be a troll, or an undesirable sex partner for any other reason? What if the older man had been solicited but refused to pay? (Senatorial privilege, they are used to freebies). We usually punish crimes, not intentions, except for cases of terrorism or where injury to others is foreseen. Who would be injured in this case, whether they had sex or not? What about the defense of entrapment? If the officer had not responded to the tapping by moving his own shoe, that could have ended the matter."

Should there be a market for organs?

Ignoring for a second that it's politically unpalatable, should we be able to buy and sell our organs?

There was an interesting article by Dubner and Levitt, both of Freakonomics fame in the NYT.

http://www.nytimes.com/2006/07/09/magazine/09wwln_freak.html?ex=1310097600en=a9dde90f918e52cbei=5088partner=rssnytemc=rss

A very complex issue, with a number of facets to consider. There are probably also hundreds of non-negligible scenarios as well. But the important question is whether it would do more good than harm or more harm than good.

I feel like it has a significant upside that people dismiss without considering fully. Perhaps individuals in our society have some sort of training to be averse to implementing extremely free-market principles to such grave matters.

Hate Crime Prevention Art Contest

Hate Crime Prevention Art Contest

Sponsored by Allstate Foundation and OCA-National

A collaborative project of OCA-New York, South Asian Youth Action! and Chinatown Youth Initiatives

Calling all New York City High School Students! Bring out the artist and activist in you to send a message that HATE CRIMES WILL NOT BE TOLERATED, win up to $2000 in prize money and get the opportunity to have your art work displayed!

What exactly is a Hate Crime? 0pt;">Local executive and legislative offices become often contentious with each other and with the public over redevelopment projects all across US cities and communities. Governments all around the world are legally allowed to use the power of “eminent domain”, government’s legal authority to seize private property for a public purpose, or what we often hear as “economic development.” In most cases, the only remaining and negotiable item to be discussed is the compensation for the private property owners for their property.

According to Wikipedia:

The U.S. Supreme Court has largely given the public use requirement an expansive interpretation and has allowed takings of private property for reconveyance to other private parties, or in some cases by private parties directly, on the theory that the new owners will put the taken land to more lucrative uses that are likely to generate more tax revenues. This is known as "economic redevelopment." It uses eminent domain to enable acquitre and then convey land to commercial development or redevelopment to increase tax revenues. The Supreme Court's decision in Kelo v. City of New London, 545 U.S. 469 (2005), affirmed the majority decision of the Connecticut Supreme Court and allowed such takings, was heavily publicized in the media. This increased awareness of eminent domain post-Kelo, inspired a great public outcry. Several states have enacted or are considering state legislation that would drastically restrict the state's own power of eminent domain. The Supreme Courts of Illinois, Michigan (County of Wayne v. Hathcock)(2004)[1], and Ohio (Norwood, Ohio v. Horney)(2006) have recently ruled to disallow such takings under their state constitutions.

I understand that in growing and expanding cities like NYC, local governments must play a role in fostering such growths by creating appropriate opportunities for economic development. But how and who decides the need for government intervention? Some cities, like Anaheim, stayed away from abusing the powers of eminent domain by deciding to respect the rights of private property and readjusting the policies so that the market economy can dictate any changes to land use. In other words, when Anaheim was faced with the decision to redevelop parts of their City, their Mayor and City Council decided to make their rezoning process and other land use policies more transparent and flexible for the public.

In NYC, many business and homeowners are fighting the Mayor’s eminent domain powers and the NYC Economic Development Corporation. Here are some interesting blogs:

http://duffieldst.blogspot.com/2007/07/organizing-against-eminent-domain-abuse.html

http://www.nolandgrab.org/

What’s also interesting is that according to a study by the Institute for Justice, “in 24 years, 2,532 projects were carried out in 992 cities that displaced one million people, two-thirds of them African American.” Eminent domain and economic development often results in the displacement of minority businesses and minority homeowners. Part of our democratic idealism pushes our government to practice equitable policies and assist the underserved, not displace them.

Do you think governments should use eminent domain? Take this poll.

8/1/07: Revisiting Sa-I-Gu

Sa-I-Gu (April 29th in Korean) symbolizes the social meltdown and havoc when Los Angeles erupted after four cops were acquitted in the beating of Rodney King in 1992.
This diplomat went even further deriding a local Asian politician because that politician did not belong to the same Asian background. I wonder if he would carry the same level of disrespect and distrust for a non-Asian politician …

Now, because I come from a very diverse background and education, and excelled in heterogeneous environments all my life, this kind of bigotry has little effect in my outlook in life. However, these diplomats with high-ranking status have significant impact and influence over the first and older generations, and consequently have an impact on how the first generations raise the next cohort of generations. Instead of appreciating and learning from diversity, foreign government officials come here to divide us and fuel a certain level of animosity and even hatred.

Taking this to another level (perhaps to the point of conspiracy theory), what if foreign government officials are asked to come here to perpetuate and instigate divisive race relations? After all, the creative spirit that is the backbone of this country’s preeminent status comes from individuals’ ability to collaborate and learn from different cultures. Two heads are always better than one.

This hate crime, motivated by anti-Japanese sentiments, served as a rallying cry for the Asian American community and is often considered the beginning of a pan-Asian American movement. Twenty five years later, Asian Pacific Americans for Progress and local partners around the country look back in time and assess where we are now. Each event will include a special screening of the Academy-Award nominated documentary, "Who Killed Vincent Chin?" and panels with local community leaders.

Receptions in New York, San Francisco and Los Angeles sponsored by Imaginasian TV. World Social Forum, the ‘G’ word gets people riled up.

But it also makes sense. It’s the word that people have camped around; or is the stake in the ground where people decide which side they are going to take. On one end, you’ve got those who benefit from it and say that the rest will eventually, someday, in the future sometime also benefit. Then you’ve got those who are getting the shaft and are tired of it.

For me, globalization is just a word and is as old as apple pie. Louis L’amour wrote a historical novel set in the 12th century called the Walking Drum. I read it in my freshman high school world history class, and what I took from it is that from the beginning of time, people have crossed regions and borders to share (and sometimes steal) ideas and technology.

Admittedly, there are ‘new-ish’ aspects to the current brand that should be noted, i.e. the intensity and pace globalization today versus, for instance, the 12th century, as well as the way that it is managed. The game is currently rigged to benefit some and not others.

And that is what I think we should focus on, the management of globalization and the special interests that have taken control of it, versus attacking a word that has taken on a human and almost sinister personality. In so doing, you attack a problem at its root, you become more accurate, and you make it alot harder for special interest to dismiss you.

First of all, it’s a leap year, that’s a big one. But in addition to that, 2008 will also bring things like the year of the rat, the Olympics in Beijing, elections in Wales, the Dominican Republic, Taiwan, and Russia (assuming Putin lets that happen)... the orbit of the Cassini Spacecraft around the 6th largest moon of Saturn… and the year the next United States president will be chosen.

Polls for the 2008 presidential election portend the completion of a cycle of change that swept through congress in 2006 that will likely put a democratic candidate in the White House. For many, this will bring a much-ballyhooed change in leadership and direction that has turned the last dregs of the Bush administration vehemently sour. For others, not so much.

In recent polls, Hillary Clinton is showing strong numbers, and the experience and fine-tuned campaign machinery seem to be paying off. In any other election, her likely victory and the change that she will bring to issues like healthcare, the war in Iraq, fighting poverty, etc. would be a no-brainer. But in this election, and with a candidate like Barack Obama, I have to ask what distance is this country willing to go to achieve true, sustainable change?

Yes, Hillary will change plenty of things. By the mere virtue of her progressive stance, we can expect significant changes in relation to the current conservative agenda. Added on top of this, her impeccable credentials, keen intelligence, the combined political wisdom of the Bill-Hillary conjugal presidency, and the support of a democratic congress will collectively add up to much, much change.

In any other year, this degree of change would probably be enough. But 2008 is different, it’s different because there is a potential for change that can only happen once in a very long time. It’s the sort of change that not only changes the players in the game and the policies that they create.... but also how the game is played and the structural barriers which divide the country between right and left, liberal and conservative, and neighbor against neighbor.

Hillary can do almost everything that the president can and should do, she is that good. But the one thing she can't do is to unite this country.

Once you gotten past all the peripheral arguments of history, tenure, experience, intelligence, etc. and arrive at the core ability to unify, Hillary will not deliver. Try and desire as she might, her tenure and record, which in most cases are assets, prevent her from changing the system... because she is the system.

In Barack, we have the freshness and the ability to unite the country in a way that has long been absent.

Whether this can be realized in time, or whether his political team can challenge the Clinton machinery is another question onto itself. But if the nation can get past the political maneuvering and campaign illusionary, 2008 can be the year we go the distance... all the way.

untangling immigration, part 1

I attended a lecture and discussion on migration and trade today that was really interesting. Given the seemingly pro-imigration policies being put forth by the president, one might assume that migration / immigration advocacy groups would be on board. As I've increasingly heard, and as confirmed by the speaker this evening, this is not the case at all. Through the negotiation process between dems and republicans, the current bill as is is has been reengineered in such a way to appease too many stakeholders. In the eyes of advocacy groups, a better bill can be had, and a better time may be when dems are in greater strength, not that dems own the immigration charge by any means... after all, it is the president's agenda.

I hardly know enough or understand the intricacies of this debate, but as I find good articles, I will share. Here is a link and excerpt of one that sheds light on the immigration application / green card process.

Hard Line on Immigrants
How long is the queue for green cards?
By Michelle Tsai
Posted Thursday, June 14, 2007, at 5:10 PM ET

Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff met with Republican and Democratic senatorson Wednesday, in an effort to revive a proposed overhaul of the nation's immigration laws. Back in May, Chertoff took pains to note that under the new law, illegal immigrants wouldn't be able to skip the line for obtaining green cards. Opponents have argued the opposite, saying that illegal immigrants would indeed get to jump to the front of the line. Just how long is the green card line, anyway?
It depends on whom you know. The spouses, children, and parents of U.S. citizens skip the line altogether and get to apply for their green cards right away. (It can still take months or years for U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services to process these applications.) Most other would-be immigrants must wait on one of two lines to get their visas for permanent residence. Those who secure sponsorship from an employer get on the faster track. This one favors the people at the top of their field—like top scientists and athletes—while less illustrious folks can wait for years. Those stuck on the much slower family line—which includes relatives not mentioned above, like siblings—must wait at least six years before they reach the front; some people have been queued up for more than two decades. (Refugees and asylum-seekers move in their own line, with the president deciding how many to accept from regions around the world.)

To stop the DISSING from the Rappers, and the Radio Personalities, WOMANKIND must change her paradigm

I discover a totally new industry by accident when my SENSE PERCEPTION CONNECTION rose to another level and I was able to interpret friendships, sweethearts and platonic loves with the opposite sex. In order to lay the groundwork for the new standards, in relationships arrangements, my goal is to unify the heterosexual community. HOW? The Loveography Institute ("LI") is an online school that, will help to bring about a revolutionary new paradigm, for today women’s.

First example, WOMANKIND must learn the truth about the straight male, three levels of development, in order to get to the root of the controversy, headed, by the Rappers. HOW? By way of linguistic communication. "Loveography," is a new words from a different school of thought.

Second example, In order to upgrade WOMANKIND images, she must develop a lexicon to define her phraseology. This will shift the insults, rather than the honors, that are due, for her contributions to humankind. Case in point: WOMANKIND has been characterized for millennia by her peaceful and nurturing manner. The female’s are the votaries, of the love and the truth, within every nation in the world. This is one of the great reasons, that the AMBASSADORS/ADVOCATES of straight people, will come TWOgether, and protest, because they are outraged by the anti recantation of the Rappers, and the Radio Personalities. Since this, is the beginning of the storm, the AMBASSADORS/ADVOCATES, must pledge unity with their HETEROPHILE brothers and sisters in order to eliminate the falsehood’s incarnate by the Rappers, and the Radio Personalities. This is crucial, because, our objective is to find women, who want to reinvent herself as THE PEACE OF MIND in every community in the world. LI can reverse WOMANKIND global imagery of *** and breeder--with a Godly touch–in honor of her original and complimentary position, which is standing beside MANKIND.
